Catriona Mairi MacIver: "Gaelic Can Not Die in Scotland."
Most Highlanders who emigrated to Pictou County (long known as the
"Birthplace of New Scotland"), to Colchester County and to other regions of
Scottish settlement in mainland Nova Scotia came from "The North" of
Scotland: from Caithness, Sutherland, Ross & Cromarty, and Inverness.
They were Gaelic speaking people, often well educated from local schools
of the time. Their Gaelic was different from that used in the outer
islands, where education was not so readily available.
